Beyond the Headline: ICHRA is Now CHOICE Arrangement
CMS and SBA renamed ICHRA the CHOICE Arrangement on 9/3/26 — a rebrand, not a rule change. We lay out the realistic timeline for the two terms coexisting (ICHRA dominant for ~6 months, real mixing through month 12, CHOICE Arrangement leading for new entrants after that), what it means operationally for TPAs/GAs, and why our ICHRA platform (Kynd Choice) — with white-label customization for our partners since day one — was already named for where this was headed.
On September 3, 2026, CMS and the SBA renamed the individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement the CHOICE Arrangement. Nothing about the underlying rules changed. The name did, and it's a better one.
"ICHRA" never told anyone what the benefit actually does. "CHOICE" does: the employer funds it, the employee chooses their own coverage. That's the whole point of the model, and now the name says so. Kyndly built our platform, Kynd Choice, around that same idea years before CMS caught up to it. The rebrand doesn't hand us anything new, it just makes the case we've already been making.
But a better name isn't the same as a better-known one. This model has existed since 2020, and adoption is still a fraction of what it could be, not because the mechanics don't work, but because too few employers, brokers, and employees understand what it is or how it functions. A clearer name helps that story land faster in a sales conversation or a Google search. It doesn't replace the work of actually building awareness.
For TPAs, GAs, and brokers, that's the real takeaway here. Update your materials, use both terms during the transition, and don't expect the rebrand alone to move adoption. The name is finally right. The job of getting more people to understand and choose it is still ours to do.
